and so the ocean brings you back to me

[Fire Emblem | full piece]

One thousand, two hundred, forty-seven. One thousand, two hundred, forty-eight.His memories of the sinking were blurry at best. The fact that he could remember at all the feeling of flailing towards the distorted image of the moon and the arms that had tugged him towards it was impressive. His father had been particularly interested in hearing that. His mother had wanted him to forget it and focus on recovering. One thousand, two hundred, forty-nine. One thousand, two hundred, fifty. But it had not been that simple. He knew that someone or something had saved him, and that knowledge had kept him awake at night. Sometimes, it even drove him to submerge himself underwater in the bath in hopes of making his few memories clearer. It never worked, because the tub was too shallow and the water too calm and his surroundings too safe. And so, he returned to the beach.

appraisal is a delicate business

[Genshin Impact | full piece]

Somewhere on this street, there was a man. In all honesty, there was nothing extraordinary about him, nothing that should've drawn her attention to him, and yet he so very fascinated her. At first glance, she had put him down as a dock worker, but the build of his frame wasn't quite right. He was slender and thin compared the burliness found on the docks. An office worker, perhaps? Ah, but most workers were given decent wages, so why dress so shabbily if one could afford it? One hand and various parts of his face were marred with black streaks and she had had half a mind to say he was a coal worker if not for the fact that there were no coal mines in this part of the nation. All those observations contrasted each other, yet they fit like perfect pieces to a puzzle. He was an artist, she reasoned, and perhaps one without a source of income at the moment.“Pardon me, miss.” She looked over her shoulder, stopping when she saw him holding her handkerchief out to her with his clean hand. “I believe you dropped this.”“Oh?” She made a small show of checking for the cloth, then looked back at him and the black smudges on his cheek. “I suppose I did. Though, it appears you might need it more than I do.”“Hm, perhaps I do.” His voice had a small lilt she had not been expecting, as if he was constantly on the verge of asking questions to the people around him or even to the empty air. “But I could not possibly use it and leave you without one.”

never knowing what could have been

[Genshin Impact | full piece]

She pursed her lips in thought, crossing her arms beneath her chest. The latter movement was a classic self-comforting posture, he noted idly, and suggested that she might have been stressed in that moment. He couldn’t blame her. “I’m sorry,” she said and he almost missed her voice over the sounds of the water. “For everything.”There were a lot of things that could be included in “everything”, the most prominent one being a thief who taunted him for over three years and escaped the grasp of the law each time. Lumine, however, had never been one to claim the obvious route. “I forgive you.” For teasing me. For being my friend. For not telling me. For making me fall in love with you.“You shouldn’t.” He glanced at her again, but her gaze was fixed on the dark waters underneath them.“People don’t always do as they should, no matter how illogical it sounds.”A somber look of amusement came onto her face. “You’re right. I can’t really say anything, huh? I shouldn’t have approached you at the shop when I first noticed you, but I did it anyway.” She let out a heavy sigh, wrapping her arms around herself. “I didn’t mean to lead you on like that, I promise.”From a distance, they might have looked like a couple going through the last stages of a rocky relationship, but they were anything but that. “I know,” he said and he did.
